Institutionalized Since Birth, Now Home with Help from MDLC

MDLC was contacted by a Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital social worker because her 18-month-old patient, “Alicia”, was ready for discharge but could not leave the facility after the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DHMH) had verbally denied in-home nursing services.  Alicia’s treating physicians were adamant that she could not go home without services as she had lived in a hospital setting since birth and her parents, who are not fluent in English, had not found alternative services.  MDLC worked with hospital staff to gather the appropriate documentation to make a formal request for nursing services that was approved by DHMH, and Alicia was discharged to her home.
